Conclusion The present paper was written on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the world-wode scientific venture called the International Geophysical Year and the International Geophysical Cooperation. The participation of Czechoslovakia was active and successful. The two following decades were, so to say, stigmatized in this country by the spirit of the IGY, the spirit of devotion and skill, as Sydney Chapman said. The quantitative growth of the staff, laboratories and working teams was, of course, significant. More significant, however, was the change in the minds of the geophysicists toward a deeper understanding of the difficult problems of the Earth. This understanding requires a closer co-operation in many fields, a gradual amalgamation along the contacts of the individual disciplines of the Earth's sciences. Ten years ago, for the first time, man touched the Moon and opened a new epoch. Geophysics will continue to develop in the new epoch, too. The author wishes the human generations, who will be living in the new epoch, good luck.  相似文献

Peperite formed by lava flows over sediments: An example from the central Paraná Continental Flood Basalts,Brazil

Pahoehoe flows interbedded with sediments have been identified in the superior portion of Paraná Continental Flood Basalts (PCFB), west portion of Paraná State, southern Brazil. In the study area peperites are generated by the interaction between lava flows and wet lacustrine sediments (silt and clay). Evidence that the sediments were unconsolidated or poorly consolidated and wet when the lava flowed over them includes vesiculated sediment, sediment in vesicles and fractures in lava flow and in juvenile clasts in the peperite and soft sediment deformation. Hydrodynamic mingling of lava and wet sediments (coarse mingling) is predominant and volcanic rocks and textures related to explosive phase of Molten Fuel Coolant Interaction (MFCI) are not observed in study area. Locally centimeter-sized areas display direct contact between ash-sized juvenile clasts and sediments formed by the collapse of a vapor film. The textures of fluidal peperites in the central PCFB indicate that the relevant factors that led to a coarse mingling between lava/sediment are (1) lava properties (low viscosity); (2) fine grained, unconsolidated or poorly consolidated wet sediment; and (3) a single episode of interaction between lava flows and sediment.  相似文献   

Open and closed magnetospheric tail configurations and their stability

The asymptotic theory valid for magnetospheric tail configurations that vary only weakly in the antisolar direction is used to derive a number of explicit properties. The conditions under which the magnetopause converges to form a closed magnetosphere or diverges (open magnetosphere) are identified and discussed. It is shown that the presence of the high latitude low pressure tail lobes guarantees the open solution. The large value of the Mach-number of the unperturbed solar wind is the reason for the slow variation of the plasma and field quantities along the tail. Criteria for (two-dimensional) stability are discussed and it is shown that they can be expressed in terms of simple topological properties of the equilibria. Closed magnetopheres turn out to be stable, open magnetospheres with sufficiently stretched field lines are subject to an instability which — as shown earlier —may be the cause of magnetospheric substorms.  相似文献

We present preliminary results from deep optical searches of small (5 arcmin²) GRB error boxes determined using the Third Interplanetary Network (IPN³). Two of these fields also have been found to have historical OT events located within the IPN³ error boxes. We compare the preliminary results of these searches to those reported for the larger IPN¹ error boxes. The small size of the IPN³ error boxes should allow a test of the hypothesis suggested by the IPN¹ study that there are excess QSOs associated with the GRB fields.  相似文献

The SBIG Model ST-6 CCD Imaging Camera was tested and found suitable for various kinds of astronomical observations on telescopes with apertures from 6 mm to 0.6 m. We discuss different noise sources, linearity, sensitivity, and other detector characteristics. Limits, which they set to the observations and accuracy of data evaluation process, are also discussed. Detection, accurate astrometry, and VR photometry limiting magnitudes are about 21, 20, and 17.5, respectively, with the 0.6-m telescope and 10-min integration time. Detection of 5th magnitude 1-second optical transients is possible with the 6-mm wide-field lens.  相似文献
